Overweight children alias obesity face health risks that are not mild and have long-term effects, including high cholesterol levels.
According to dr.Klara Yuliarti, Sp.A, obese children are often found to have high bad cholesterol (LDL), good cholesterol (HDL) low, and also high triglycerides.
"Therefore, children who have high body mass index before age 5 to 7 years should be checked cholesterol levels," he said in an educational media event titled "Long-Term Impact of Childhood Obesity" held in Jakarta (20/11/2017).
In addition to high cholesterol, obese children can also experience high blood pressure. "These are all risk factors for coronary heart disease, but when the age of childhood the effect is not seen, but heart disease later when aged 30-40 years," he said.
Another complication of obesity is insulin resistance which puts her at risk of developing diabetes mellitus, sleep apnea, joint problems, and gallstones.
