Do not underestimate Excess Cholesterol in the Body

Cholesterol is a type of fat in the body which is useful for cell formation and various hormones . Thus , cholesterol is needed by the body in order to live a healthy or normal .
According to the staff of the department of pharmacology Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia , Dr. KS SpKF suharti , no cholesterol a person can not live . However , if the number or levels in the blood is too high ( over 200 mg / dl in blood tests after a minimum of 10 hours of fasting ) , then here's cholesterol is no longer useful but can be the cause of various diseases . And , if not immediately addressed , it can endanger the lives of patients .
Actually , the word suharti , not just cholesterol that should always be considered . There are components of the blood fats that have an important role , namely triglycerides , HDL and LDL ( or often referred to as HDL - cholesterol and LDL - cholesterol ) . '' Sources of fat in the body comes from the foods we eat everyday , such as food or cakes made of cheese , butter , meat , and milk , '' he said .

Suharti stated , all fats are not soluble in water or in the blood . Hence , blood cholesterol have a special conveyance known as lipoproteins . Based on the density ( density ) , when examined with a special tool , lipoproteins can be divided into high -density ( high density lipoprotein or HDL ) and low density (low density lipoprotein or LDL ) .
Excessive cholesterol ( hypercholesterolemia ) , he added , will not be transported entirely by lipoproteins from the blood flow throughout the body which will be brought to the hepatic ( liver ) . In the patients with this type of blood test , after a minimum of 10 hours of fasting total cholesterol levels will be obtained in the 220-250 mg / dl and LDL number is also higher than normal ( higher than 150 mg / dl ) . While the amount of HDL may decrease or less than 40 mg / dl . '' Is it dangerous for people ? This of course depends on whether or not the relevant rapid response to the situation , '' said suharti .
He explained that the presence of elevated levels of LDL showed that the amount of cholesterol is transported from the liver to peripheral regions ( blood vessels and other organs ) increases . This means that in the blood vessels there is excessive cholesterol . Therefore, when blood is drawn and checked for cholesterol levels , the results showed higher levels than normal .
If this situation is left for a long time , the excess cholesterol was going to stick on the walls of blood vessels ( cholesterol plaques ) . As a result , the blood vessel wall which was originally quite flexible ( easily wrinkled and wide ) , over time will become more rigid ( atherosclerosis ) and can not be pulsed to perfection . '' In addition, the blood vessels will also be narrowed or vasoconstriction , '' he said .
