Overweight children alias obesity face health risks that are not mild and have long-term effects, including high cholesterol levels.
According to dr.Klara Yuliarti, Sp.A, obese children are often found to have high bad cholesterol (LDL), good cholesterol (HDL) low, and also high triglycerides.
"Therefore, children who have high body mass index before age 5 to 7 years should be checked cholesterol levels," he said in an educational media event titled "Long-Term Impact of Childhood Obesity" held in Jakarta (20/11/2017).
In addition to high cholesterol, obese children can also experience high blood pressure. "These are all risk factors for coronary heart disease, but when the age of childhood the effect is not seen, but heart disease later when aged 30-40 years," he said.
Another complication of obesity is insulin resistance which puts her at risk of developing diabetes mellitus, sleep apnea, joint problems, and gallstones.
"In other words, obesity is the cause of various chronic diseases. To manage child obesity is not easy so it is better to do prevention as early as possible, "explained the teaching staff in the Division of Nutrition and Metabolic Disease, Department of Child Health, FKUI / RSCM.
Clare explained, almost 90 percent of obesity cases in children due to environmental factors, such as high-calorie diet, lack of movement, or any history of obesity in the family.
Prevention of obesity is done by familiarizing healthy balanced diet in the family. Usually obese children have an unbalanced diet.
"There are food rules that must be obeyed, which is to comply with the schedule of three meals and two snacks." Obese children are generally over-consuming milk and eat too much, "he said.
Although obese, but children are not recommended to run any diet. "It is feared that it can affect the growth and development of children, and the diet will be given according to their ideal needs," he said.
In addition to regulating diet and physical activity, parents are also advised to regularly measure the body mass index of children, namely the distribution of body weight in kilograms with their height in meters squared.
