Stroke is a disease that strikes without warning. Even so, there are many things we can do to avoid stroke.

The theme of World Stroke Day which falls on October 29 is What Can I Do? This theme invites everyone to contribute even the slightest to prevent stroke.

"Stroke occurs due to ruptured or blocked blood vessel. This is because the blood vessels are not healthy, so we have to keep our blood vessels are always healthy," said dr.Roslan Yusni Hasan, a specialist neurosurgery of RS.Mayapada Jakarta, to Kompas.com (29 / 10/14).

He explained that there are two factors that stroke can be controlled and can not be controlled. "What can not be controlled such as age, the increasing age of the blood vessels will be stiff. Other factors are male sex, race-specific taste, and also a history of previous stroke," he said.

Factors that cause the actual strokes that can be controlled more. For example, high blood pressure, untreated diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, and smoking. Such diseases will accelerate clogging and damage blood vessels.

"If you already have hypertension, control of high blood pressure in order not to continue, as well as diabetes. This disease makes blood vessels are not healthy and should be treated," he said.

In addition, start maintaining weight, quitting smoking, and reducing unhealthy foods.

Roslan added that the principle of stroke treatment is saving lives and limiting disability. "Because it prevents the occurrence of stroke would be better, everyone should do our part to minimize the occurrence of stroke," he said.

Stroke occurs because blood flow to the brain is blocked so that the cells in the brain die due to lack of oxygen. Once part of the brain does not get the blood, 90 seconds later there will be the death of brain tissue.

Stroke symptoms to look out for include difficulty in pronouncing sentence or visible pelo, stiffness in one part of the body, loss of balance, dizziness terrific, and swallowing disorders.

Stroke is a medical emergency that needs to get help right away in the hospital.
