Okinawa Diet Can Help You Reach 100 Years of Age

Diet is usually done by reducing the amount of carbohydrates consumed. Now there is a new diet pattern that changes the trend above, even this diet can make longevity.

Residents in the Okinawa region, a collection of several islands in southern Japan, are one of the regions with the highest living population in the world. Reported in the Daily Mail, in recent years, Okinawa residents who touched the age of 90 years dropped dramatically.

Medical research says this happens because of changes in dietary patterns and excessive consumption of processed foods. The Okinawa diet basically makes yams a staple food and consumes high amounts of yellow and green vegetables.

While protein is consumed in minimal amounts, it is usually soybeans and fish. Nuts are also eaten in small amounts. This excess diet has been highlighted by the Okinawa Centenarian Study (OCS).

Studies say this diet is a diet low in refined carbohydrates and high in fiber. This dietary arrangement is understood to be anti-inflammatory and hence helps prevent age-related diseases, including some cancers, heart disease, and Alzheimer's.

It is also considered anti-inflammatory because it is low in fat but has high omega-3 fatty acids. Although many fatty acids are contained in fish, they are also found in soybeans which are also consumed for the Okinawa diet.

Because this diet is low in refined carbohydrates, it will reduce the risk of elevated sugar levels in the body. This diet also requires eating lots of green and yellow vegetables that contain lots of vitamins C, E, and A.

Nutrient-dense foods and natural chemical compounds also contain antioxidants that are important for the body's immunity to free radicals. The Okinawa diet eliminates stigma for those who believe that health can only be obtained by eliminating carbohydrates.

Australian dietitian Geraldine Georgeou says she supports the benefits of consuming the right amount of carbohydrates as part of a balanced meal. "The way the Okinawan diet seems to indicate various foods and carbohydrates needs to be consumed daily, as opposed to the dietary trends we see in the media," he said.

He also added that eating carbohydrates, such as sweet potatoes, provides low blood sugar but is rich in vitamin A. "Most people forget the role of balanced eating and the role of food in the diet," Geraldine said

Carbohydrates provide energy, fiber, and also help provide antioxidants and maintain microbiomes (microorganisms from bacteria that have an important function for the health and well-being) of our intestines.
