The study was conducted to look back on four previous studies involving about 350,000 people. The result, a growing number of eating white rice, the higher the chance for someone to develop the condition.

The findings, published in the British Medical Journal analyzed all participants through a 18 gram serving of rice and other factors, such as weight, exercise levels and diet. During the study period (4-22 years), approximately 13 200 people develop diabetes.

Asians are considered high risk for type 2 diabetes. This is due to the Asia tend to have a much higher intake to consume rice than Westerners, on average three to four servings a day.

The researchers explained that there are negative effects on blood sugar levels because white rice contains a high glycemic index than brown rice. In addition, white rice has fewer nutrients, including fiber and magnesium, which can prevent type 2 diabetes.

The glycemic index is a measure of how quickly glucose is released into the bloodstream after eating. Foods containing low glycemic index, such as brown rice, make people feel full longer and keeps blood sugar levels more stable.
