UGM Find 100 New Molecules in Turmeric Curcumin

Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta found 100 new molecules of curcumin turmeric (curcuma longa) that eight of which have been patented.

"Curcumin has developed a new molecule that has analgesic, anti-inflammatory effect and can be used as a cancer therapy," said researcher curcumin from the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Gadjah Mada (UGM) Supardjan, in Yogyakarta, quoted by Antara on Tuesday (17/01/2012).

According to him on the sidelines of a seminar on "Turmeric Philosophical and Scientific Overview", based on his studies, turmeric curcuminoid shown to contain compounds which turned out to contain the yellow curcumin molecule, demetoksin curcumin, and curcumin bisdemetoksin.

"For these curcumin derivatives have been studied even further. Derivatives more red to the anti-inflammatory, while the yellow is more to protect the liver (hepatotoxic)," he said.

He said, curcumin is also good for diabetics to prevent clotting does not occur, or blood clots.

"We have developed a new curcumin limited to herbal medicines and chemical drugs have not been used because it requires clinical trials with a longer time and requires a huge cost," he said.

According to him, turmeric plant widely available in Indonesia and has been traditionally used by the community both as food and medicine.

"Scientific research shows that turmeric contains curcumin is known to have been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, antioxidant, antimicrobial, anticancer, and antitumor," said Supardjan.

Pharmacological Researcher Faculty Kertia Nyoman said, turmeric rhizome extract is also effective as an anti-inflammatory joint disease in patients (osteoarthritis).

"Extracts of turmeric rhizome has the ability to reduce levels of malondialdehida (MDA) of the knee joint synovial fluid," said Kertia .
