The result of research of Lampung student showed that giving of guava boiled water had an effect to decrease blood sugar level of diabetics. The research is based on traditional habits using guava to lower blood sugar.
Dedi Rahayu, a final semester student of STIKes Umitra Lampung nursing program, in Bandarlampung, Monday (7/8), explains, has conducted a study aimed to determine the effect of guava boiled water to decrease blood glucose levels in people with diabetes mellitus type II Setia Bumi Village, working area of Totomulyo Public Health Center, Tulangbawang Barat Regency, Lampung.
He mentioned, diabetes mellitus patients (DM) in the village of Setia Bumi as many as 33 people. Guava (Psidium guajava) is one of the traditional medicine that can lower blood sugar, considering the content contained in guava fruit one of them is an antioxidant that can reduce oxidative damage in diabetics.
Dedi explained, DM is known as diabetes is a chronic disease caused by the body's inability to produce insulin hormone or due to ineffective use of insulin production. Prevalence of DM in the world of 1.5 to 2.3 percent is estimated to be 5.7 percent by 2020. In Indonesia, the prevalence of DM each year, ie 1.1 percent to 2.1 percent. In Lampung Province the prevalence of DM increased from the previous year, which was 49,568 cases to 69,282 cases.
He explained, the research design is Quasi experiment with non equivalent control group. The population in this study were all patients of type II DM in Setia Bumi Village which amounted to 33 people with a sample of 15 control groups and 15 intervention groups.
Sampling technique used purposive sampling. Test the hypothesis used t-paird simple t-test.
The result of the research from the alumni of SMK Kesehatan Bhakti Nusantara Banjar Agung subdistrict, Tulang Bawang district, found in the group given guava boiled water for 7 days during pretest and post test showed the average value of GDS decreased, that is 291.87 to 244.33.
While the group that was not given guava boiled water when pretest and post test showed an average of 309.53 to 289.27 or decreased only slightly. The result of t-paired test shows that there is influence of boiled water of guava fruit to the decrease of blood sugar level in type II diabetes mellitus patient, with p-value 0,002.
According to him, this research as an input and information for local health centers, especially nurses in order to improve the quality of nursing services and provide an alternative in Puskesmas in overcoming diabetes.
"Adding to the community's knowledge about the benefits of guava for an alternative to diabetes treatment before using pharmacological or pharmaceutical therapy," said Dedi who lives in Setia Bumi, District of Mount Terang, West Tulangbawang regency also.
