Four cholesterol-lowering foods

Heart attacks can occur when the cholesterol level in the body is too high. The main cause of heart attack is coronary heart disease.

This condition is where the main blood vessels that supply blood to the heart are blocked by cholesterol deposits. If cholesterol deposits rupture, this can cause blood clots to develop which can trigger a heart attack.

People with high cholesterol in the blood can reduce it by making certain dietary changes. As reported by Express, Monday (31/12), Heart UK recommends to include the following four foods into the diet to help reduce cholesterol.

Foods made from soybeans

Soybeans contain protein, healthy fats, vitamins, minerals, and other vegetable nutrients. Foods made from soybeans are naturally low in saturated fats. So try exchanging fatty milk, meat and other foods high in saturated fat with soy alternatives. Other alternatives can include milk and yogurt from soybeans, soybeans, soybean pudding, soybean desserts, and minced meat mixed with soybeans.

Fiber dissolves

Fiber is very important for a healthy diet and is found in all fruits, vegetables, and cereals. Oats and wheat contain a special form of soluble fiber called beta glucan. Soluble fiber helps reduce cholesterol. Beta glucan works by forming a gel in the intestine that can bind cholesterol-rich bile acids and stop them from being absorbed into the body.

Nuts

Nuts contain many heart-healthy nutrients such as protein, fiber, sterols, vitamin E, magnesium, potassium, zinc, and copper. They are also naturally rich in unsaturated fats and low in saturated fats so they can help lower cholesterol.

Sterol and stanol

Sterol and stanol are equivalent to cholesterol and are found in many plant foods in very small amounts. When eaten in larger quantities every day, they can help reduce cholesterol by reducing the amount of cholesterol that the body can recycle.

Sterols and stanols can be found in milk, spreads, and yogurt.

"If your cholesterol rises, there are treatments available if you need it. But it is usually possible to reduce cholesterol naturally with healthy lifestyle changes, "Heart UK said.
