Recent
research findings, fasting one or two days a week can help prolong the
life expectancy of a person and can help protect the brain against
degenerative diseases (the regression function of the cells) such as
Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, according to a study done by researchers as
quoted by The Huffington Post .
Researchers
from the National Institute on Aging found that by not eating at all
for one or two days a week not only increases the possibility of
avoiding dementia later in life, but also could be the key to a longer
life, as fasting increases the lifespan of mice by 40 %.
Scientists have known for some time that low-calorie diet is a recipe for healthy living. However,
recent research suggests that by reducing about 500 calories for a day
or two for a week, significantly slowed the onset of the disease in the
brain.
The researchers say, with fasting, the chemical in the brain promote limited calorie intake.
Calorie restriction in previous studies to increase the lifespan of mice. Similar effects according to the researchers might also experienced by humans, although it is difficult to test.
"Reducing
calorie intake can help your brain, but by reducing food intake
(fasting)," said Prof. Mark Mattson, chief of neuroscience lab, told The
Huffington Post, Monday (02/20/2012).
Bonus Islam
Prior to this, a doctor from East Java, Dr. dr. Achmad Zainullah have done thorough research on fasting. Studies
of the High School students Luqmanul-Hakim (STAIL) Hidayatullah
pesantren Surabaya found that fasting was even more healthful.
According
Zainullah, more research results prove the message in the Quran and the
Hadith increasingly true, as the Prophet Shalalllahu message that says,
"Fast when you, then you will be fine." Previously, the Prophet has
even taught his people to Fasting (fasting day, a day break ) or fasting setiah Monday and Thursday.
Remarkably in Islam, in addition to a healthy bonus, the fasting person's reward. "It
is not a slave to fast one day in the way of God except Allah will keep
his face from the Fire (with fasting) the distance traveled as far as
70 years." (Narrated by Bukhari, Muslim and others). *
