Frequent Headaches and Migraine Signs Stress

Headaches and migraines are often a sign of stress . The new study found evidence suggesting that stress can trigger headaches and migraines .
The researchers analyzed data from 5,519 participants aged 21-71 . They found that participants experienced an increase in headache per month associated with increased stress . These findings were presented at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Neurology in Philadelphia .
In the survey , participants reported stress levels and their headaches during 2010-2012. As many as 31 percent of participants experienced headaches as depressed , 14 percent had migraine , and 11 percent had a combination of migraine and headaches .
Participants who reported experiencing headaches , stress levels reach an average of 52 out of 100 . Those who experience migraines have a stress level of 62 100 . While they are experiencing a combination of both stress level of 59 100 .
" Tension -type headache and migraine is a primary headache disorder that occurs in 80 percent of the general population . This is the reason why we chose to examine both, " said study author Sara H Schramm of the University Hospital at the University Duisburg - Essen , Germany .

The data show , for each type of headache , increase in the level of stress associated with an increase in the number of headaches per month . 10 Increased levels of stress associated with the rate of 6.3 per cent rise in pressure -type headache , migraine rise 4.3 percent , and four percent increase in the combination of headache and migraine .
The researchers say this is the first study to show that stress can affect headaches . " As far as we know , a prospective population-based study that evaluated the effect of stress on the frequency and type of headache has not been done before , " said Schramm .
Tension -type headache and migraine have different symptoms . Tension -type headache is characterized by headache with mild -to-severe intensity and intense pain . While migraine is characterized by a severe throbbing headache accompanied by nausea , vomiting , and sensitivity to light and sound .
" It is not known whether they are the same biological mechanism or different in response to stress , " says the researcher .
According to the researchers , these findings demonstrate the importance of stress management for patients with headaches and migraines . Psychological treatment , especially coaching for stress , is important .
