Honey is usually consumed directly or added to other types of food or drinks. Especially if it is mixed into something warm it is often a habit.
But did you know, adding honey to something warm can be dangerous?
Indeed, honey has been used as a medicine for various diseases for decades. The natural sweet substance in it has many benefits, ranging from cleaning the intestines, calming irritated throats, making wonders for the skin, relieving sinus symptoms among many other benefits.
Honey mixed into something warm is often believed to make the body fresh, free of toxins. If you still believe that way, there is a very important reason to stop doing it as soon as possible. What you drink is poison, according to Ayurvedic doctors and nutritionist Rekha Jithin
What many people don't know is that honey should not be warm, cooked, or heated under any conditions. This claim can be supported by the practice of Ayurveda, which shows that honey is never heated or cooked.
According to Ayurvedic beliefs and systems, honey is useful in its natural goodness, when in its raw form. On the other hand, warm honey has a tendency to cause "ama" in the body, which is a type of toxic substance formed when the body faces digestive problems.
When honey is slowly digested in the body, its properties change similar to poisons. Then in turn it can cause many different diseases.
The rule also applies to every honey purchased from a supermarket, because it is usually heated under extreme temperatures so that it can make it toxic. Don't forget, honey is sometimes processed and is mostly stored in plastic containers.
So, should you stay away from honey? There is no reason why you better skip honey and all its benefits. The best way is to consume it raw, buy or extract it from the source. Or, if you want to enjoy a glass of milk with honey before going to bed, make sure that the milk is cool enough before mixing it with a spoonful of honey at room temperature.
There are also scientific reasons why you should not increase the temperature of honey. Any heating containing sugar can release a chemical called 5-hydroxymethylfurfural or HMF which is believed to be carcinogenic.
The increase in temperature allowed for honey is less than 140 degrees which is much lower than a glass of your hot milk. So, when you mix honey in hot milk, the nature of honey changes and becomes toxic and harmful to health.
