Heny Ekowati from Indonesia, inventor of the Cancer Drugs Red Chilli & Ginger

Cancer is a disease that is feared by many people because of deadly and is still hard to find a cure for menyebuhkannya. The treatment process is still very expensive, and the patient's pain caused tremendous suffering of cancer patients continues to increase.

Starting from concern over the condition, Heny Ekowati, researcher and university lecturer pharmacy General Sudirman (Unsoed) tried researching to find a cure for cancer plant. Finally, research conducted since 2009 is coming to fruition.

Heny said that the focus of his research includes two things, namely finding medicinal plants to cure cancer and drugs to suppress the side effects of cancer treatment, cancer patients lived.

"Cancer is a disease that cause tremendous pain for the sufferer. When cancer patients undergoing treatment as long as this is done, medications and treatment process that also adds to the pain suffered by the patient, "said Heny.

So far Heny considerable research to fruition is black cumin (Nigella sativa) as an anti-cancer. His latest invention, the mixture of Ethanol Extracts of Red Ginger Rhizome (Zingiber officinale cv rubrum) as an anti-breast cancer and Fruit Chili Java (Piper retrofractum) as an anti-cervical cancer.

Decision Heny chose Red Ginger Rhizome and chili Java as an object of research is because both plants are native plants in Indonesia. "I want to find a cure for cancer from plants native to Indonesia and can be planted easily by anyone, even in the yard. Moreover, the plant is also recommended by the POM because it can serve chemopreventive and chemotherapy, "he said.

Research and Chili Red Ginger Rhizome Java has been through the pilot phase of the animals, ie mice. As a result, both the potential of this plant as a medicinal plant to treat cancer or to lessen the side effects of cancer treatment.

With the successful test of the animals in both the plant is no longer just an herb, but a standardized herbal. Then, a second crop can be fitofarmaka (herbal standardization has been carried out on the raw materials used, and meet the quality requirements applicable) if it has been clinically tested on cancer patients.

To develop the continued research in finding a cure for this cancer, Heny helped members of Indonesian Society for Cancer Chemoprevention (ISCC). Heny also established a Center of Excellence for Translational Research in Oncology (CENTRO) in December 2011 which consisted of 31 people, including students of S-2 and S-1.
