Low Carbohydrate Diets Better Than Low-Fat Diet

If you want to lose weight and improve heart health, choose a low-carbohydrate diet than low fat.

In an attempt to obese adults, researchers found that those who follow a low carbohydrate diet lose more body weight over one year than those who carry out low-fat diet.

In addition, another advantage gained is decreased levels of cholesterol and triglycerides. The authors report in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine.

"On average, they lost more than 8 pounds and body fat," said researcher Dr. Tian Hu, from Tulane University School of Public Health in New Orleans.

Meanwhile, although some experts say low-carb diet is not good for heart health, this latest finding shows just the opposite.

"Low-carbohydrate diets are traditionally seen potentially risky," said Bazzano, a professor of nutrition researcher at Tulane.

However, in this study, they were doing a low carb diet so better cholesterol and triglycerides. According to Tian Hu, it could happen due to weight loss that much more, or of unsaturated fats in their diet.

Unfortunately, the study was only done for a year so it is not known what the effects of these diets in the long term.

Low-carbohydrate diet does not mean we avoid carbohydrates altogether, but replacing simple carbohydrates such as rice or flour with complex carbohydrates.

According to Hu, these findings do not mean low-carb diet is the best diet to lose weight. However, there is no one type of diet that is suitable for every person.

Hu suggested that adjusting the diet to their individual needs. For heart health, for example, which is considered the best diet is the Mediterranean diet which recommends the consumption of complex carbohydrates and healthy fats such as olive oil.

In the end, choose a diet that can survive in the long term, not only to weight loss. Because your weight will easily return to its original weight.
