Menthol Cigarettes More Dangerous than Regular Cigarettes

Menthol cigarettes pretty much favored because of the mint flavor which makes it not too hard compared to regular cigarettes. However, according to a study, menthol cigarettes can actually cause lung problems are more severe than regular cigarettes.

Many of them were hospitalized because of lung disease. They had difficulty breathing and the amount of mucus for days.

The researchers speculate that menthol has anesthetic effects on the airways making it more difficult to identify lung diseases in smokers.

"We were surprised that menthol smokers could be worse than non-menthol smokers," said Marilyn Foreman of the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta.

Menthol cigarettes favored by young people. Canadian researchers found that young people who choose menthol cigarettes account for nearly double that of a regular cigarette. In this study, they spend an average of 43 cigarettes menthol in a week, while regular cigarettes by 26 rods.

With a cooling sensation in the mouth and was not too hard as regular cigarettes, menthol smokers intend considered more difficult to quit smoking. They will be addicted to smoking menthol and just want to continue to try it the next year.

Foreman and colleagues studied 3,758 smokers and 1,941 regular smokers of menthol. Those aged 45 to 80 years and smoked at least 10 pack years. Smokers of menthol mostly a young woman and a black.

In the early stages of research, menthol smokers do not seem to suffer chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). They are also less likely to experience a chronic cough, phlegm, and using medications to help breathing.

At the 18-month study, smokers of menthol and non-menthol has the same frequency of COPD. However, menthol smokers experienced more severe exacerbations, which is 0.22 percent, compared with regular smokers, which is 0.18 percent per year.

When the six-minute walk test, menthol smokers also worse than regular smokers. They also feel more short of breath. Menthol smokers a 29 percent higher risk of experiencing an exacerbation of lung disease is severe.
