It typically takes about one to two weeks for canker sores heal, depending on its size.

The cause of canker sores is not known with certainty, but a minor accident such as accidentally biting his lip or cheek inside could be the cause.

In addition, hormonal, nutritional deficiencies, particularly vitamin C, are sensitive to certain foods, allergies and stress can also trigger canker sores, said Bill Crutchfield, DDS, an orthodontist in Northern Virginia.

But that is not all, U.S. National Library of Medicine says, hormonal changes, family history, poor immune and have two X chromosomes could also be a trigger and is more common in women than men.

As already mentioned, the sprue is relatively easy to overcome, partly by traditional means such as:

Once canker sores come, first avoid drinking grapefruit juice or whatever tastes sour. Acid can irritate canker sores more, causing a burning sensation, and prolong the healing process, said Rajan Sharma, DDS, owner of EON Clinic.

"Keep in mind, that the bacteria in your mouth can also transform sugars into acid," he added. "This is one of the main causes of tooth decay and prolong the healing of canker sores."

Change your toothpaste

According to the Mayo Clinic, toothpaste and mouth rinses containing sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) can trigger canker sores in some people.

SLS-free toothpaste may not get rid of canker sores but at least they do not irritate canker sores as much as other toothpastes.

Use one teaspoon of baking soda into a cup of warm water and gargle several times a day for a few minutes.

Gargling with hydrogen peroxide

Crutchfield recommends gargling with hydrogen peroxide to treat thrush. Hydrogen peroxide is an antiseptic that cleanses the wound and speed healing, but it's not like salt water.

Mix hydrogen peroxide with water at a ratio of 1: 1.
