Chairman
of the Task Force on Immunization Adults Medicine Specialist
Association of Indonesia (Papdi) - Indonesian Doctors Association (IDI),
Prof.. Dr.Samsuridjal Djauzi SpPD-KAI stated, immunizations for adults can not be ignored, and no less important to immunize children.
"In
fact, immunization of adults to prevent the risk of death one hundred
times higher than the immunization of children. Every year, tens of
thousands of adults and hundreds of thousands of others had to be
hospitalized because of the disease that could be prevented by
immunization," said Samsuridjal in Jakarta, Sunday (01/13/2013).
Not
only babies and toddlers, adults also need immunizations due to the
increasing age of a person, the more vulnerable he also will be exposed
to the disease. "Immunizations for adults, especially the elderly, can prevent death significantly," he said.
Samsuridjal added, the goal of immunization in adults and children differently. In
children, the immunization is meant to prepare the child to have a
strong immune system, whereas in adults, especially in people aged more,
immunizations aims to prevent death by diseases that can be prevented.
One
of the dangerous diseases that can be prevented by immunization adult
pneumococcal disease is a collection of several diseases such as
meningitis, pneumonia, middle ear infections, blood infections and
sinusitis that can be suffered by all ages, especially children and
adults as well as to individuals who have conditions chronic medical.
Pneumococcal
disease can be transmitted through interpersonal contact such as
through the medium of air, through sneezing or coughing. As
for the symptoms of the disease vary, depending on the location and
severity of infection, such as pneumonia symptoms include fever, chills,
cough, and shortness of breath and for pneumococcal meningitis
(inflammation of the lining of the brain by pneumococcal bacteria) can
have symptoms of fever, headache and stiff neck.
People
who have chronic illnesses such as diabetes, asthma, and heart disease
is also called Samsuridjal more vulnerable to complications of influenza
and pneumococcal diseases.
"In
fact, 52 percent of geriatric care at the Hospital of Madura is due to
pneumonia. This proves that pneumococcal disease is a real threat to the
health of the people of Indonesia," he said.
Pneumonia
caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae to be one of the main causes of
serious illness among adults, including bacteremia, meningitis, and
pneumonia, which is transmitted through interpersonal contact, through
which germs spread through the air by sneezing or coughing like.
Samsuridjal
adds, adults aged 50 years and older have a higher risk for
pneumococcal disease, it is important for them to carry out medical
consultations to physicians and vaccination.
