Immunization in Adults Also Important

Chairman of the Task Force on Immunization Adults Medicine Specialist Association of Indonesia (Papdi) - Indonesian Doctors Association (IDI), Prof.. Dr.Samsuridjal Djauzi SpPD-KAI stated, immunizations for adults can not be ignored, and no less important to immunize children.
"In fact, immunization of adults to prevent the risk of death one hundred times higher than the immunization of children. Every year, tens of thousands of adults and hundreds of thousands of others had to be hospitalized because of the disease that could be prevented by immunization," said Samsuridjal in Jakarta, Sunday (01/13/2013).
   
Not only babies and toddlers, adults also need immunizations due to the increasing age of a person, the more vulnerable he also will be exposed to the disease. "Immunizations for adults, especially the elderly, can prevent death significantly," he said.


Samsuridjal added, the goal of immunization in adults and children differently. In children, the immunization is meant to prepare the child to have a strong immune system, whereas in adults, especially in people aged more, immunizations aims to prevent death by diseases that can be prevented.
   
One of the dangerous diseases that can be prevented by immunization adult pneumococcal disease is a collection of several diseases such as meningitis, pneumonia, middle ear infections, blood infections and sinusitis that can be suffered by all ages, especially children and adults as well as to individuals who have conditions chronic medical.
   
Pneumococcal disease can be transmitted through interpersonal contact such as through the medium of air, through sneezing or coughing. As for the symptoms of the disease vary, depending on the location and severity of infection, such as pneumonia symptoms include fever, chills, cough, and shortness of breath and for pneumococcal meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain by pneumococcal bacteria) can have symptoms of fever, headache and stiff neck.
   
People who have chronic illnesses such as diabetes, asthma, and heart disease is also called Samsuridjal more vulnerable to complications of influenza and pneumococcal diseases.
   
"In fact, 52 percent of geriatric care at the Hospital of Madura is due to pneumonia. This proves that pneumococcal disease is a real threat to the health of the people of Indonesia," he said.
   
Pneumonia caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae to be one of the main causes of serious illness among adults, including bacteremia, meningitis, and pneumonia, which is transmitted through interpersonal contact, through which germs spread through the air by sneezing or coughing like.
 
Samsuridjal adds, adults aged 50 years and older have a higher risk for pneumococcal disease, it is important for them to carry out medical consultations to physicians and vaccination.
