What Are the Symptoms of Stroke

Stroke is a sudden illness that attacks the brain . These conditions can be fatal and cause disability . However , with the rapid and precise handling , the impact of greater damage to the brain can be avoided .

Strokes caused by blood supply to the brain is impaired . When blood flow to the brain is blocked , the nerve cells do not get oxygen and nutrients . As a result , the function of brain cells will be damaged permanently .

" The longer the stroke left untreated , the more damage to the brain . Brain will be broken within 5 minutes after the stroke . Having said that , the longer the patient was taken to the hospital , the worse the consequences , " said neurologist Franky Susatia in a media event education held by SOHO Global Health in Jakarta , Tuesday ( 20/05/2014 ) .

Therefore, it is important to recognize the symptoms of a stroke . For simplicity , we can remember three things when a stroke occurs , ie, through a smile , talk , and hands .

Smile : Ask the person to smile . When the smile feels a bit " weird " and usually face ( especially lips ) so skewed , it may be suspected stroke symptoms .

Talk : Ask the person to speak and utter a simple sentence . If he had trouble pronouncing sentence or look pelo , it can also suspected stroke symptoms .

Hand : Ask the person to raise both arms . If the hand can not be lifted symmetrically and simultaneously , it can be one of the symptoms of a stroke .

The symptoms of stroke are also often preceded by severe dizziness , loss of balance , difficulty walking , swallowing disorders , and also the loss of coordination of the hands and feet suddenly .

" If you have these symptoms , get help to bring the patient to the hospital . Only a doctor at the hospital who can handle a stroke , " said Franky .

He added , a stroke can happen anytime , anywhere. " They are over the age of 50 years , or those who have long suffered from diabetes or hypertension , are more at risk of stroke , " he said .
