Researchers from the Department of Aquatic Product Technology, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences Institute of Agriculture (IPB) conducting studies on the pharmacology of the mangroves especially black mangrove leaves.

Kustiariyah Tarman, Sri Purwaningsih and Anak Agung Putu Ayu Puspita mixing state of black mangrove leaf extract with two types namely methanol and water solvents. "The methanol extract of black mangrove leaves contain more active components than the water extract of black mangrove leaves," said Kustiariyah.

The bacteria that cause diarrhea usually is E. coli, EPEC, S. aureus, P. aeruginosa and S. typhimurium. Black mangrove leaf methanol extract has antibacterial activity shown by the inhibition zone against five bacterial causes of diarrhea with the highest antibacterial activity against S. aureus. Inhibition zone formed ranged from 9-12 mm.

Value of the minimum inhibitory concentration of the methanol extract of E. coli and P. aeruginosa by 0.4 mg / mL, S. aureus at 0.2 mg / mL. "From the results of the study, the methanol extract of leaves of black mangrove potential as pharmaceutical preparations for the treatment of diarrheal diseases," he said.
