Apparently, Smoking Not Eliminate Stress

One reason many people can not stop cigarette smoking is believed to reduce stress and anxiety. However, scientific studies prove just the opposite. People who smoke usually have mental problems.

When compared with nonsmokers, smokers turned out 70 percent more likely to suffer from anxiety and depression. Source of anxiety is the cigarette itself.

"What happened when we light a cigarette is the first sign of symptoms of addiction. And, the symptoms are very similar to the stress. Smoking will eliminate the symptoms and if we feel better, in fact it is the early symptoms of nicotine withdrawal," said Mike Knapton of the British Heart Foundation.

In other words, if we thought that smoking can control stress, smoking actually exacerbate.

The study was conducted by a team from University College London and the British Heart Foundation, involving 6,500 people aged over 40 years. It is known that more than 18 percent of smokers in the study reported having anxiety and depression, compared with 10 percent in non-smokers and 11.3 percent in former smokers.

"Taste the high that we get from cigarettes is not useful because it destroys the body. A lot of other ways to cope with stress, for example, talking with friends, exercising, or cooking. Do a preferred hobby so the mood is better," says Michael Roizen, wellness experts from Cleveland Clinic's.
