Other Dangers of Smoking, Diabetes Risk

Smoking can increase the risk of various diseases, including diabetes mellitus. Based on study results Diabcare in 2012, as many as 90 percent of diabetes patients turned out to smokers.

This data is obtained based on a sample of about 2,000 diabetic patients in Indonesia. "Smoking has also played a role. According Rudjianto, cigarette smoke contains free radicals obviously can interfere with the performance of insulin produced by the pancreas. Insulin is needed by the body to convert glucose into energy. Without insulin, sugar stays in the blood that causes high blood sugar.

Earlier, Chairman of the Executive Board of the Indonesian Diabetes Association (PB Persaida) General Pranoto who is a specialist in internal medicine, said smoke can increase the risk of complications of diabetes. Therefore, smoking can damage blood vessels and increase the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Chairman of the Executive Board of the Indonesian Diabetes Association (PB Persaida) Pranoto Court explained, smoking is a major factor causing blood vessel damage that increases the risk of coronary heart disease and stroke.

According to the Court, smoking also can cause sensory nerves in the body becomes dead or is not functioning. As a result, patients with diabetes often can not feel when the other complications that arise.

Therefore, patients with diabetes are required to implement a healthy lifestyle, ranging from a balanced diet, regular exercise, to stop smoking. Healthy lifestyle course also very important for the prevention of various diseases.
